Where to buy
a real Finnish sauna.
Saunaroots is a blog. We don't sell saunas directly. But we've done the work of finding who does — dealers and installers who actually know what a real sauna is.
Most things sold as "Finnish saunas" in the US are not Finnish saunas.
They're prefab wooden boxes with infrared panels, marketed with words like "Scandinavian," "Nordic," or "Finnish-inspired." The cabin might look right. But if there's no kiuas — no real sauna stove with proper stones — there's no löyly. And without löyly, it's just a warm room.
A real Finnish sauna reaches 80–90°C. You ladle water onto hot stones. Steam rises and fills the room. That's the experience. That's what's worth buying.
What to look for
- —A real kiuas. Wood-fired or high-output electric — both work. Infrared does not.
- —Solid wood construction. Heat-treated thermo-pine or aspen. Not laminate, not MDF. Real timber that's built for heat.
- —Proper ventilation. Fresh air in low, steam out high. Non-negotiable for both the experience and the longevity of the cabin.
- —Someone to call after. Maintenance questions, stove upkeep, getting proper löyly — know who you're buying from.
